About Gift of Life Michigan
Gift of Life Michigan is the state's federally designated full-service organ and tissue recovery organization. It acts as the intermediary between donors and their families, physicians and hospital staff. Established in 1971, Gift of Life's mission is to improve and extend the lives of the citizens of the state of Michigan by increasing public and professional participation in organ and tissue donation for transplantation. Last year, there were 288 deceased organ donors in Michigan, and these generous individuals provided 864 life-saving organs that were transplanted. In addition, nearly 900 tissue donors provided gifts such as bone, skin, heart valves and tendons that improved the lives of thousands of residents here and across the nation. Anyone -- regardless of age or medical history -- can join the Michigan Organ Donor Registry to document their wish to help others after they are deceased. It takes less than a minute to join at http://www.giftoflifemichigan.org/ or by calling 800-482-4881. In Michigan, about 3,000 people are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant, and nationwide the number is over 106,000.
