Overview

Honigman’s Defense industry group represents national and international defense industry contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers in multiple aspects of their businesses. Our experienced cross-disciplinary team addresses specific client needs and handles various transactional, regulatory, and litigation matters in the defense space.

Our team includes a former senior attorney in the Pentagon for the Department of the Army, as well as lawyers with decades of experience assisting some of the largest defense contractors in the world in their dealings with government agencies and suppliers.

Michigan has played an important role in defense and homeland security since World War II, when its engineering and manufacturing prowess helped equip and protect the nation’s soldiers and defenders. Today, the sector is as important as ever. Michigan is home to an impressive number of military and defense-related facilities, including advanced research labs, testing grounds, and bases. The state has placed special emphasis on this industry, helping both entrepreneurs and established firms within the state to diversify into this sector. Companies outside of Michigan are also choosing to locate here because of the talented and skilled workforce, technology infrastructure, and history of innovation.

Honigman represents U.S-based companies and non-U.S. suppliers that have direct contracts with the government, as well as those serving as secondary suppliers in the supply chain. We offer specific knowledge in addressing challenges faced by non-U.S. based companies seeking to acquire businesses or provide services to the U.S. government.

We advise defense-industry clients on a variety of issues, including: (1) government contracting and procurement matters; (2) International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Administration Regulation matters; (3) registrations with the U.S. Department of Defense; (4) enforcement actions; (5) creation of federal contractor and export compliance programs and compliance assessments; (6) supply chain management and subcontracting; (7) mergers and acquisitions; (8) creation, licensing, and protection of intellectual property in the defense industry; and (9) antitrust matters and environmental matters. We also counsel clients with respect to local and state government investment incentives and tax savings.
