Sheldon Winkelman elected President of the Michigan Housing Council

Press Release

Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP (Honigman) today announced that Sheldon Winkelman, partner in the Real Estate Department, has been elected President of the Michigan Housing Council for a one-year term.

Founded in 1989, the Michigan Housing Council (MHC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the financing, construction, management, and rehabilitation of affordable housing in Michigan.  Winkelman has been a member of the MHC since its inception and is the first attorney to hold the position of president.

“I am honored to be chosen by my colleagues to lead industry efforts in the promotion of the MHC mission,” said Winkelman.  “I also look forward to working closely with the new Michigan State Housing Development Authority leadership and the non-profit community as we focus on investment, underwriting, marketing and other challenges facing our industry during this very difficult time.”

Winkelman earned his bachelor of arts degree from Wayne State University in 1961 and his Juris Doctor from Wayne State’s Law School in 1963.  He has more than four decades experience working on a wide variety of commercial real estate and financing transactions with an emphasis on government-assisted housing.  His other areas of practice include: Gaming and Hospitality; Tribal Sovereignty and Development; Affordable Housing; and Government Assisted Financing.

Listed in the 2008 edition of The Best Lawyers in America, as well as 2007 Michigan Super Lawyers, Winkelman has authored several articles on market rate and affordable housing that have been published in the Michigan Bar Journal and the Journal of the Real Estate Section of the Michigan Bar Association.

An attorney with Honigman since 1987, Winkelman is a member of both the Michigan Bar and Washington D.C. Bar.  He currently resides in Bingham Farms, Mich., with his wife Rissa.
