Former DOJ Leader Mark Cipolletti Joins Honigman’s Investigations and White Collar Defense Practice in DC
Cipolletti's hire enhances the firm's national white collar, investigations, and enforcement capabilities while bolstering its presence in Washington, DC
WASHINGTON – Honigman LLP announced today that Mark Cipolletti joined the firm as a partner in the firm’s Investigations & White Collar Defense Practice Group of the Litigation Department. He joins Honigman from Thompson Hine and brings more than a decade of experience with the U.S. Department of Justice, where he served as Principal Assistant Chief of Litigation in the Criminal Division's Fraud Section and helped lead significant fraud and white collar enforcement matters.
“Mark’s distinguished experience as a litigator significantly enhances our white collar and government investigations capabilities,” said J. Michael Huget, chair of Honigman’s Litigation Department. “The opportunity to add an attorney of Mark’s caliber with an accomplished litigation practice aligns strongly with our continued growth strategy.”
Cipolletti’s practice involves complex financial crimes, including securities law violations, market manipulation, investment fraud, False Claims Act matters, public corruption, cross-border crimes, and government enforcement investigations. With experience trying more than 65 jury trials to verdict, he has managed a range of matters involving financial fraud, regulatory violations, criminal procurement fraud, health care fraud, domestic bribery, money laundering, FCPA (Foreign Corrupt Practices Act) violations, and ABAC (Anti-Bribery and Anti-Corruption) matters. Earlier in his career, he served as an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia, where he handled hundreds of criminal trials involving homicide, sexual assault, and other felony offenses.
“Mark’s white collar and government investigations experience will deeply strengthen our ability to serve clients facing complex litigation,” said Jeffrey Lamb, vice chair of Honigman’s Litigation Department. “He brings a strong record of managing a wide variety of high-profile matters that we know will complement our growing bench of talented litigators.”
He served in the U.S. Department of Justice as Principal Assistant Chief of Litigation in the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section. In that role, he supervised litigation, worked on high-profile cases, contributed to the development of the Fraud Section’s cryptocurrency and digital asset practice, and participated in the department’s commodities enforcement initiative.
“Mark’s extensive experience with the Department of Justice brings tremendous credibility to our growing team of Honigman attorneys in the nation’s capital,” said Harold Fox, Ph.D., managing partner of the firm's Washington, DC, office. “We look forward to the impact he will have as we continue to expand our presence, strengthen our market visibility, and build momentum in Washington and beyond.”
Cipolletti’s government experience also included efforts to combat fraud against the government through the use of data analytics and collaboration with agencies including the Securities and Exchange Commission, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. He has worked on matters that brought criminal prosecution to cases previously handled by civil regulators and participated in a landmark investigation into clergy abuse in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.
Cipolletti earned his J.D. from Widener University School of Law and received his B.A. from Temple University.
