Richard Zuckerman Rejoins the Honigman White Collar Defense and Investigations Practice Group after four years at U.S. Department of Justice
Zuckerman assisted in leading the investigation into the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa; Also represented Pulitzer Prize winning journalist in case about protecting sources

DETROIT, April 16, 2021 - Honigman LLP is pleased to announce Richard Zuckerman has rejoined its White-Collar Defense and Investigations Practice Group as a partner in the firm’s Detroit office. Zuckerman most recently served as head of the Tax Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. As such, he was part of the senior leadership of the Department. He was responsible for overseeing the deputy assistant attorneys general for civil litigation, civil appeals and tax policy and review.

Prior to his role at the Justice Department, Zuckerman spent 30 years at Honigman as the chair of the White-Collar Crime and Government Investigations Practice. He has also represented public companies, boards and audit committees. Zuckerman has represented executives in national and international civil and criminal antitrust matters involving a variety of industries, from computer software and pharmaceutical to financial services, among others.

Zuckerman rejoins Honigman having supervised internal investigations related to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) parallel civil and criminal investigations as well as advised public and private companies and individuals in civil and criminal tax audits and investigations.

In addition to his esteemed law career in the U.S. DOJ, Zuckerman led numerous high-profile cases and held Top Secret-Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) Security Clearance, among the highest security clearance designations in the U.S. government.

A few of Zuckerman’s many career highlights include:

  • United States v. Giacalone, (6th 1978), seven-month net worth federal income tax evasion trial of the alleged Detroit Mafia Capo, who arranged the meeting from which Jimmy Hoffa disappeared
  • Assisted in leading the investigation into the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa
  • Convertino v. United States Dep’t of Justice, (6th 2015). Representation of a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist in litigation designed to attempt to discover his sources behind a news article about federal prosecutorial misconduct, which sources were alleged to be DOJ employees with access to a DOJ Inspector General Investigative Report
  • Zuckerman was a trial attorney in the Organized Crime and Racketeering section in the UNITED STATES DOJ in Detroit from 1974 – 1977 and assigned to the U.S. DOJ, Detroit Strike Force. He was responsible for supervision of complex, multi-agency investigations and the preparation and trial of criminal cases developed from those investigations. Litigation responsibilities included grand jury, pre-trial, trial, and appellate proceedings before the U.S. District and Courts of Appeal

Zuckerman earned his J.D., cum laude, from Southwestern University Law School in Los Angeles and his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Michigan.
