Governor Granholm held the first of five proposed town hall meetings to convince the voters of Michigan to support her tax restructuring plan. The Flint based audience did not want to see education or government services reduced and some supported the concept of tax increases. Others bristled at the concept of an excise tax on services. A real estate agent queried whether the 6% service tax on top of the real estate transfer tax would slow housing sales and a manufacturer worried whether the tax would render Michigan companies noncompetitive.
