Robert Riley is an attorney in the Litigation Department. His multidisciplinary litigation experience includes complex commercial litigation, commercial transactions, shareholder disputes, appellate advocacy, and corporate restructuring.

  • Counsels international manufacturers in commercial disputes with their suppliers, distributors, customers, and competitors
  • Leads e-discovery projects and contract attorney teams under tight deadlines in state and federal courts
  • Represents private equity firms, portfolio companies, real estate investment firms, and their directors and officers in shareholder and derivative litigation
  • Develops strategies for protection of just-in-time supply of component parts produced by non-performing, financially distressed, or bankrupt suppliers
  • Advises regarding maintenance of supply relationships, including supply contracts, purchase order terms and conditions, and general commercial transactions
  • Represents creditors, debtors, and customers with respect to commercial matters, financial structuring, and out-of-court workouts
  • Serves the firm as a member of the Value Team and as a member of the Summer Associate Committee


  • Represented national distributor in a $15 million trademark infringement action and twice defeated a motion for a preliminary injunction following assertion of affirmative defenses; resolved case with no liability to client after winning sanctions award against the plaintiff
  • Obtained $5.8 million judgment, plus attorney’s fees, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia as second chair representing an international manufacturer in a breach of contract dispute arising out of a U.S. Navy shipbuilding program
  • Managed e-discovery efforts in a $13 million fraud dispute in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania regarding complex financial and accounting issues
  • Filed amicus curiae briefs on behalf of the National Association of Counsel for Children and Legal Services Association of Michigan in the Michigan Supreme Court
  • Advised General Motors in the automotive supplier bankruptcies of A123 Systems, Inc. and Fisker Automotive Holdings, Inc.
  • Represented private equity firm in connection with claim against former shareholder of portfolio company for breach of purchase agreement representations and warranties
  • Counseled clients in supply chain litigation, breach-of-contract litigation, temporary restraining order, preliminary injunction proceedings, and lien disputes
  • Advised Capitol Bancorp Ltd., a national bank holding company with total assets of approximately $2 billion, in its Chapter 11 reorganization
  • Served as an intern while attending undergraduate and law school to various organizations, such as:
