Press Release

Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP is again number one in the United States as the legal advisor for banks and thrifts, ranked by number of deals through the third quarter of 2011, according to SNL Financial, a leading source for banking data and news. Honigman also was ranked number one in SNL’s 2010 fiscal year rankings. Honigman tops a list that includes many of the nation’s most prominent law firms, including Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz; Luse Gorman Pomerenk & Schick, P.C.; Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP & Affiliates; Hunton & Williams LLP; and Sullivan & Cromwell LLP.

In the past 12 months, Honigman has represented banks in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

“Faced with greater regulation and the need to improve capital ratios, more banks are merging operations and selling assets to achieve financial stability,” said Phillip D. Torrence, Chair of Honigman’s Financial Institutions Practice Group and Office Managing Partner of the firm’s Kalamazoo office. “Through this process, banks are surviving and improving their bottom lines in tough times and we are pleased to guide our clients through these deals. Like the rest of the global economy, the financial industry is in a state of flux -- acquiring, consolidating, branching out, creating and entering new markets in order to keep in step with the changing needs and wishes of businesses and consumers.”

Honigman’s Financial Institutions Practice Group offers clients a full range of legal services related to mergers and acquisitions, capital raising initiatives, complex regulatory issues, strategic planning and navigation through the financial services environment. The firm regularly serves the special needs of multi-bank holding companies, as well as individual community banks.
