Referendum Proposal for All New Taxes

December 20, 2007
December 20, 2007.   The State Board of Canvassers approved a petition for circulation, which is a proposal that would require an automatic statewide referendum each year in  February to approve any statute that creates a new tax, raises a tax, or continues a tax.  This proposal would require a referendum on the new Michigan Business tax and the surcharge as well as the income tax increase. In addition the  petition l also requires tax referendums to be held each general election after the adoption of the any tax proposal, to allow  the tax to remain in effect. If a tax is defeated in the referendum, it would remain in effect until the end of that fiscal year.
