Legislative Tax Action
March 16, 2007March 16, 2007. It was a very busy tax week in Lansing. The Senate Finance Committee announced a series of four hearings around the state on the 2% excise tax and the rest of Governor Granholm's tax restructuring proposal. The first hearing was held on Wednesday with testimony on both sides of the issue. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop discharged the entire 23 bill package comprising Governor Granholm's tax restructuring proposal to the floor of the Senate. A vote on the package could be called as early as next week. Senate Finance Committee hearings will continue on the "idea of the plan" as the bills are no longer before the Committee. In the House, Tax Policy Chair Steve Bieda has called for twice weekly meetings of the Tax Policy Committee to take testimony on the numerous replacement tax plans and the service tax proposal.
