February 26, 2007 Michigan Manufacturing Association Supports Broad-Based Tax

February 26, 2007
The Michigan Manufacturing Association (MMA) called for passage of a "fair, broad-based business tax" but did not endorse any of the replacement tax proposals put forth by other groups.  The MMA also called for complete elimination of the onerous personal property tax that it calls a disincentive to invest in new equipment.  The MMA said that the replacement tax must ensure that all businesses pay some portion of whatever tax succeeds the SBT.  The MMA's endorsement of guiding principles, devoid of any specifics, is symptomatic of the inability of the Michigan business community to agree on a replacement tax plan.
