Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP Partners Douglas H. Siegel and Kelly T. Murphy recently addressed attendees of the MichBio Expo and Conference held in Grand Rapids. Siegel and Kelly, both attorneys in Honigman’s Intellectual Property and Technology Practice Group, served on a panel entitled “Emerging Business: Protecting IP – Patent Reform, PTO Changes and Court Decisions.” The discussion included information about recently passed U.S. patent reform and the many changes related to data exclusivity, patent challenges and infringement, patent eligibility of DNA sequences and related methods, and the likely implications for start-ups and established companies alike.

Siegel focuses his practice on life science intellectual property matters. He serves numerous life science industry clients with preparation, prosecution and opinions related to patents, trademarks, trade dress and copyrights. He also litigates these issues in state and federal courts and before administrative tribunals. Siegel earned a J.D. from the University of Wisconsin Law School; an M.S. in cell and molecular biology from Michigan State University; and a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Murphy counsels clients on government contracts, grants and procurement regulations, and is a specialist in patent procurement, regulatory compliance and the negotiation of licensing agreements for domestic and international pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, nonprofits and academic institutions. Murphy earned a J.D. from Columbus School of Law, Catholic University of America. He also received an M.S. in molecular biology and a B.S. in biological sciences from Western Michigan University.
