Honigman named largest law firm in Detroit by the National Law Journal
Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP was recently named the largest law firm (by number of lawyers) in the city of Detroit in the April 2 issue of the National Law Journal (NLJ) as part of its “NLJ 250 Regional Market Report.” This report was generated from a NLJ survey of the top 250 law firms in the country.
Honigman has been located in the First National Building in downtown Detroit for more than 60 years, ever since Jason Honigman and Jack Miller became partners in 1948. The firm has been committed not only to keeping its headquarters in Detroit but also to continuing its growth here.
“Honigman has received national recognition and successfully competes with some of the leading law firms across the country as the result of our extraordinary skill, vast experience, client service ethic and its efficient fee structure,” said Honigman’s Chairman and CEO David Foltyn. “The firm’s Detroit and Midwest roots provide a great advantage when competing for business with top law firms due to its ability to provide a high level of legal services and a lower cost structure than East and West coast firms or those in money-centered cities like Chicago. It has also been an advantage in recruiting and retaining top attorneys who want to return to the area due to family ties or establish roots here for the first time because of the Midwest’s cost of living, its array of cultural institutions and family-friendly neighborhoods.”
Today, Honigman operates an international practice from its offices in Detroit, Bloomfield Hills, Lansing, Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo with more than 230 attorneys and 350 staff. Honigman’s attorneys practice in more than 50 different areas of business law and consistently receive high ratings from their peers and clients, both nationally and in Michigan. Fifteen of the firm’s key practice areas were highly ranked, along with practices of the nation’s most prominent law firms, by U.S. News Media Group and Best Lawyers® in 2011. In addition, for the past three years, Honigman has been named as one of the top three law firms in the United States as legal advisor for banks and thrift deals (ranked by number), according to SNL Financial, a prominent source for banking data and news. Also in 2011, Honigman’s Corporate/M&A, Litigation and Real Estate practices received the highest ranking in Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business. In the same year, Honigman led all Michigan law firms in the number of attorneys named as Michigan Super Lawyers and “Rising Stars.”
Honigman takes great pride in the firm’s commitment to the communities where its attorneys and staff work and live, and in particular, to its philanthropic work in Detroit. Aside from the many pro bono projects that are undertaken by its attorneys, its attorneys serve the community on nonprofit boards and in local organizations, providing their skill and experience for causes that they believe in and where they hope to make an impact. Just a few examples include: Partner David Page taking the lead role in the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, Partner Alan E. Schwartz who was recently honored for his support of the DIA, Partner Alan S. Schwartz who has served as the chairman of the Karmanos Cancer Institute Board for the past four years and Partner David Foltyn who currently serves on the Board of Directors for United Way for Southeastern Michigan.
