Honigman Attorney Stanley H. Pitts re-elected to the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association Board
Stanley H. Pitts, a partner in the Labor and Employment practice at Detroit-based business law firm Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP, has been re-elected to an additional one-year term as a member of the D. Augustus Straker Bar Association Board of Directors for 2008 – 2009.
The D. Augustus Straker Bar Association was formed in 1990 as a special purpose bar association recognized by the State Bar of Michigan. It was founded as a proactive organization of diverse attorneys, with a mission of promoting legal practice opportunities for minorities and women. This will be Pitts’ second term as a member of Straker’s board of directors.
"I look forward to participating in Straker’s new mentorship program that was jointly developed with the Thomas M. Cooley Law School,” Pitt said. “The program is designed to assist minority law students with successfully navigating through the law school experience."
At Honigman, Pitts’ practice focuses on defending corporations and other employers in family and medical leave disputes, discrimination and other employment matters. An alumnus of Wayne State University, Pitts earned his juris doctor in 1981 and a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 1978.
With experience representing national and regional clients in both federal and state courts, Pitts has earned respect as a formidable litigator in cases claiming employment discrimination based on race, gender (sexual harassment), age, religion, disability, national origin, color, pregnancy and retaliation.
A former attorney for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, Pitts is involved in several organizations devoted to racial and gender equality, including the Wolverine Bar Association, National Association of African-Americans in Human Resources, Center for Civic Education Through Law and the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association's Judicial Candidate Evaluation Committee.
A past recipient of the EEOC Chairman's Organizational Performance Award, Pitts has also lectured extensively on the subject of workplace diversity. Pitts lives with his wife Valerie in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.
