Alan S. Schwartz elected as chair of Karmanos Cancer Institute board of directors

April 30, 2008

Detroit-based business law firm Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP congratulates Alan S. Schwartz, current vice chairman and immediate past chairman and CEO of Honigman, on his election as chair of the Karmanos Cancer Institute Board of Directors.  His three-year term will begin May 1.

Schwartz has long been an active supporter of the Karmanos Cancer Institute.  He has served for many years as a member of its Board of Directors and Executive Committee and, for the past seven years, as a vice chair.  Schwartz is succeeding Randolph J. Agley, who will continue to serve as vice chair.

“There are many people, my family members included, who look to the Karmanos Cancer Institute for treatment, education and a reassuring example of the Detroit community at its best,” said Schwartz.  “We have a great responsibility to many people, and I am strongly committed to continuing to help to strengthen the Institute in the years ahead.  It is a blessing to have a nationally-renowned cancer center right here in mid-town Detroit.”

Speaking for the Karmanos Cancer Institute, John C. Ruckdeschel, M.D., president and chief executive officer, noted:  “Alan’s exceptional leadership and thorough assessment and decision-making skills will continue to guide us as one of the leading cancer institutes in the country.  We look forward to the energy and insights he will bring us as our new chair.”

Schwartz graduated cum laude from Harvard University Law School in 1968 and received a B.A. in History with high distinction from the University of Michigan in 1965.  Since graduation from law school, Schwartz has built a successful career in family business planning and succession, acquisitions and sales of businesses and general corporate representation.  He served a five-year term as chairman and CEO of Honigman from 2002-2007, and is now serving as the firm’s vice chairman.

Widely regarded for his extensive client experience and commitment, Schwartz has been listed in Chambers USA as a top lawyer in the Corporate/M&A field since 2003 and has been listed in Best Lawyers in America for over two decades.
