Denise J. Lewis named as "Best Attorney" by the Black Women Contracting Association

Denise J. Lewis was recently named "Best Attorney" in Black Women Contracting Association's ("BWCA") list of 2005 Best Awardees.  Ms. Lewis and the other 2005 awardees were recognized at a luncheon on June 15.    Founded in 2001, BWCA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) Michigan corporation. The BWCA  is an organization of Black women who own their own businesses.  It promotes access and expands business opportunities between Black female entrepreneurs and private sector entities, governmental units and prime contractors.

Ms. Lewis is a partner at the Detroit office of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP and is a member of the firm's Real Estate Department.  BWCA announced that Ms. Lewis was selected for the award based upon her achievements as one of the leading real estate attorneys in Michigan.   She was honored by BWCA as the first female attorney and the first minority attorney in Michigan to be elected to the American College of Real Estate Lawyers and her recognition as the only black woman attorney in Michigan included in the international listing, Chambers and Partners, as one of the leading business attorneys.

Ms. Lewis represents and counsels developers, owners and investors in connection with projects ranging from retail development, office, multifamily, industrial, single-family and mixed-use hotel/office development.  She represents corporate clients engaged in real estate transactions, such as the downtown headquarters projects for General Motors Corporation and Compuware Corporation.  Ms. Lewis focuses on projects in urban centers involving public/private partnerships and issues of redevelopment and restoration, environmental planning, land use planning, brownfield financing, tax abatement and tax increment financing.

Ms. Lewis earned her J.D. cum laude from the University of Michigan Law School in 1983, a M.A. from Wayne State University in 1969, and a B.A. cum laude from Columbia University in 1966.
