Mr. Huget is one of Michigan’s leading intellectual property litigators. He has appeared as counsel in more than 250 cases in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, including numerous cases in which he has served as lead trial counsel.  Mr. Huget is chair of the firm’s Litigation Department and leader of the Intellectual Property Litigation Practice Group.

  • Represents a range of clients, from top Fortune 100 companies to individual entrepreneurs in industries as varied as automotive, pharmaceutical, media, consumer goods, software, and manufacturing
  • Possesses significant appellate experience, particularly in the Federal Circuit and Sixth Circuit Courts of Appeals
  • Engages in high-stakes emergency litigation remedies such as preliminary injunction motions and seizures of infringing goods
  • Litigates cases in federal courts throughout the country, including California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah and Virginia
  • Serves as a member of the firm’s Media Industry Group


  • First to argue the United States Patent and Trademark Office’s calculation of Patent Term Adjustment (PTA) on behalf of a client and received a favorable judgment that secured additional “B Period” PTA for the client and future patent holders
  • Obtained summary judgment for Johnson Controls Inc. in a matter brought by an engineer who claimed to be the sole inventor of patents related to universal garage door opener technology
  • Successfully defended a Fortune 100 automotive supplier in a three-week patent trial before the Chief Judge for the Eastern District of Michigan
  • Was lead attorney on behalf of a major motion picture studio in a six-week Eastern District of Michigan copyright infringement trial
  • Defended an automotive wheel supplier accused of patent infringement in multi-district patent lawsuits
  • Was lead trial counsel in a patent infringement case in Texas against counterfeiters of a patent owner's fuel pump technology. The case settled after successfully obtaining a verdict on liability 
  • Was lead trial counsel for an advertising agency accused of service mark infringement
  • Served as trial counsel for a pharmaceutical company seeking damages for a breach of licensing agreement related to topical analgesic compounds
  • Served as trial counsel for a leading university seeking a determination of patent rights against a major pharmaceutical company
  • Was lead trial counsel for Sony Corporation in a fraud and misappropriation matter
  • Was trial counsel for a leading fiberglass manufacturer during the six-week damages phase of a patent infringement case
  • Was trial counsel for a leading Detroit newspaper in a defamation action
  • Was lead trial counsel for an automotive supplier accused of defamation by a customer’s employee
  • Has significant appellate experience, particularly in the Federal Circuit and Sixth Circuit Courts of Appeals, where, among other matters, he has handled:
    • An appeal after an adverse trial verdict in a multi-million dollar patent infringement case involving grit-free slip resistant coatings
    • An appeal of the summary judgment obtained for a music company and songwriter accused of copyright infringement
    • Defense of a successful trial verdict in patent infringement cases involving wheel cladding technology
  • Is often involved in emergency matters such as preliminary injunction motions and seizures of infringing goods, including:
    • Lead a successful seizure of knock-off cigarette rolling papers in a case involving copyright and trademark infringement
    • Pursued non-competition claims on behalf of a DNA sequencing software manufacturer
    • Defended preliminary injunction claims in a patent case brought by an automotive trim supplier
    • Pursued a preliminary injunction against a trademark and copyright infringer who improperly sought and obtained take-down notices against Facebook and Home Shopping Network
    • Handled preliminary injunction proceedings on behalf of two automotive suppliers in a case that involved rolling code encryption technology for garage door openers
