History

Celebrating our 60th year of operations in 2008, the history of Honigman emulates the storied tradition of American ingenuity. The firm’s roots trace back to post-World War II Detroit when a young Russian immigrant named Jason Honigman, and his associate Milton J. "Jack" Miller, founded a partnership called Honigman and Miller. In the early 1950s, a third partner, Alan E. Schwartz, was hired after two years of practice with a major law firm in New York City and the firm took on the name Honigman Miller and Schwartz. Later that decade Honigman Miller and Schwartz merged with the law office of Irwin I. Cohn and we have since been known as Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP. With our headquarters still in Detroit, we also have regional offices in Lansing, Oakland County, Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo.

Since those upstart days several decades ago, our firm, commonly referred to as Honigman, has grown into one of the largest business law firms in Michigan.  With more than 230 attorneys and 335 staff members, today Honigman enjoys a reputation as one of the leading law firms in both Michigan and throughout the United States. Our attorneys are widely recognized for their scholarship, legal acumen and service to their clients.

Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business has consistently ranked Honigman as Michigan’s number one law firm in Corporate, Litigation and Real Estate for the last five years.  In addition, 69 of our attorneys were listed in the 2009 edition of Best Lawyers in America. The firm also had the greatest number of attorneys in Michigan in each of the following categories: Corporate Governance and Compliance; Corporate; Franchise Law; Government Relations; Health Care; Insurance; Land Use and Zoning; Leveraged Buyouts and Private Equity; Mergers & Acquisitions; Real Estate; Securities; Tax; and Venture Capital. Furthermore, Corporate Board Member magazine has ranked Honigman as the No. 1 corporate law firm in Detroit in both 2006 and 2007.

With 27 core practice groups, each working in concert with the other for the benefit of our clients, Honigman today is looking toward the future of law to maintain its status as the “go to” firm for the business community. Not content to rest upon our laurels, we continue to maintain the highest standards of practice to provide our clients with outstanding legal services that help them attain their goals.
